Carol’s technique of machine embroidery derives from her special skill of drawing. She layers different colored threads one upon another to completely cover her canvas, creating an incredibly dense and rich surface. Most remarkable is that Carol’s “painting by sewing machine” is done freestyle under the sewing machine needle. Carol Shinn is a studio artist who lives in Fort Collins, Colorado. She is known internationally for photo-realistic machine-stitched images. Her embroidered scenes suggest a narrative without telling a specific story; the story instead becomes the one the viewer tells about his or her relation to the locale depicted. Her work focuses on the moods evoked by place, especially by the contrast between interiors and exteriors. Carol is particularly interested in the way that doors and windows frame our perceptions of our immediate surroundings, focusing our attention on the beauty of the overlooked, and the mundane objects, often ignored, that are the very things that create our special sense of place. Carol holds a BFA from the University of Colorado and a MFA from Arizona State University.
