Renovation

Before

Tarts

After more than a month of being closed, the gallery is happy to reopen and is looking better than ever. Unfortunately, very few people will ever see the most expensive and laborious part of the renovation, the wiring in the attic. All of the old and inadequate wiring was removed and new placed through-out the front building. We have a new lighting system and all new plaster walls. Next time you are visiting be sure to ask to see the secret view into the adobe bricks used in the original construction. Of course, the art work is what is most important and we do not want the building to overwhelm the extraordinary artists whose work is continuously on view. We are very glad to have the construction over and to be back to normal. Geoffrey Gorman's exhibit "Creatures of Curiosity" is a wonderful beginning of 2010 for us. He is a premier example of creativity and the power of imagination fired by superb invention. His exhibit opened Friday, Feb. 12 and he was again honored Friday, Feb. 26, at ARTfeast, a collaboration between galleries and restaurants to raise funds for art programs in the Santa Fe public schools. Our partner this year is The Tart's Treats, a new popular breakfast and lunch restaurant.

Fifty works by our artist Cindy Hickok were featured at the Knitting & Stitching Shows 2009 in October and November in London, Dublin, and Harrogate, in England and Ireland.  "With thread in needle and tongue in cheek..." expressed the artist's wry humor in her work of narrative embroideries.  Over 113,000 attendees were inspired by the exhibitions and booths.  Also featured at the 2009 shows were the juried exhibitions "Art of the Stitch," sponsored by the Embroiderers Guild UK, and the Pfaff Art Embroidery "Let Us Travel" juried exhibition of machine stitchery, both which included work by Cindy Hickok.  Hickok was a final juror for the Pfaff Travel exhibition and her entry "See the USA" was the feature of the show's invitation. We are pleased to be able to show a number of works from all these exhibits.

Introducing Shane Fero

  2

Shane Fero began creating works in glass using flameworking techniques while a teenager.  Forty years later, he is considered one of the pre-eminent artists at the torch. His flameworked glass goddesses, birds and hybrid human-animal figures are influenced by primitive myth and twentieth-century Surrealism. Sometimes these figures are incorporated in blown glass vessels. Fero says that the influences of philosophy, mythology and sociology as well as personal dreams and symbols are fused together in his work.

Fero's resume is long and distinguished. Examples of his work in glass can be found in museum collections in Japan, Denmark, Germany and the United States. His renown as a teacher covers an even wider range of distinguished schools, art centers, and museums.

Sara and David Lieberman Gift to
Museum of Art and Design, New York City, NY

Home
David and Sara surrounded by friends
who happen to also be basketmakers

Over the last 15 years Sara and David Lieberman have brought together an unmatched collection of contemporary baskets. Because of the Lieberman’s rare openness to new ideas and art forms, their vast collection embraces functional baskets grounded in ancient traditions as well as baskets containing expressive, sculptural and conceptual significance. “Intertwined: Contemporary Baskets from the Sara and David Lieberman Collection” showcasing the gift, will be on exhibit March 16, through September 12, 2010 at the Museum of Art and Design in New York City. This exhibit offers an opportunity to experience many of the pivotal pieces in the history of basketry today. If you haven’t seen it, be sure to travel to NYC during the exhibit.

The Jane Sauer Gallery is very proud to have had a role in growing this collection and in having the honor to share the excitement of discovery and passion of collecting with David and Sara. They are rare individuals who not only love the art they have brought into their lives but have always shown support and respect for the makers of that art. It is very in keeping with their sense of community and sharing the riches of art that they would make a thoughtful gift of this collection to a highly respected museum allowing the work to be experienced by an ever growing audience.

“To Beautiful Future”
Kazuko Yamanaka

My pick for the month is Kazuko Yamanaka and her crocheted wire creations. Even though they are created from metal, these sculptures appear light, airy and delicate. The organic nature of the works contrast with the man-made materials used to create them. The piece pictured, “To Beautiful Future,” Stainless steel, brass, copper, 10” x 14” x 14” exhibits all these attributes, evoking images of sea creatures, clouds, and curiously organic forms; all these except stiff, cold, hard wire of copper, stainless steel and brass. Beginning her career as a textile artist Kazuko has transitioned smoothly from fiber to metal. Creating large scale works that completely fill gallery space to small intimate jewelry pieces, Kazuko has been able to carry through the ethereal feel of her work.

There are 3 flights a day to/from Dallas (DFW) and 1 flight a day from Los Angeles (LAX).  As you probably know, Santa Fe is a major tourist destination offering several unique vacation experiences.
