JON ERIC RIIS
| |
The High Museum of Art, Atlanta, Georgia has acquired "INSECT ICON"by Jon Eric Riis. The tapestry celebrates the colorful and detailed magnificence of various insects. Typical of some of Riis' work, it is overwhelmingly beautiful and with surprising subject matter. The viewer stops and is forced to think deeper about the narrative. The insects, woven of metallic and silk thread, are seen swarming on a field of freshwater pearls. If you are in Atlanta, this piece is currently on exhibit with new acquistions for 2009. Don't miss it! |

LESLEY RICHMOND

This exquisite piece by Lesley Richmond has become a part of the permanent collection of the Baltimore Museum of Art. Lesley’s work is in many important collections in Canada, where she lives, but this is her first American museum. This past year she has been very busy with commissions, most notably a very large 3 part piece for a Penthouse in Tulsa representing seasonal changes. |

Lesley also has the honor of having a teapot purchased for the distinguished Kamm Teapot Foundation Collection, begun by Gloria and Sonny Kamm to assure that the public would have access to their astounishing teapot collection, containing over 6,000 objects. Many of the objects were made especially by artists for the Kamm collection. Lesley became enchanted by the idea of her usual imagery becoming a teapot and after much experimenting, created this unique teapot |

GEOFFREY GORMAN
| |
Geoffrey Gorman recently installed one of his larger, suspended, flying birds with a wingspan of 81" in the visitor’s area of the Grants, NM, Animal Shelter. The installation was part of New Mexico's "Art in Public Places Program," which acquires outstanding artworks for the State of New Mexico's art collection. After a first screening by a state arts panel, the final selections are made by locations across the state. This is an extremely competitive program given the large number of artists that call the Southwest States home and would like this kind of public visibility.

The Danish Embassy celebrated it's annual Christmas party, December 1 and 2, entitled "Cool Creative Christmas." Over 500 Washington Celebrities attended the party with food prepared by renowned Danish chef Trina Hahnemann and creative decorations provided by the Danish Design School in Copenhagen and Corcoran College of Art + Design in Washington, DC. Adding to the visual extravaganza at the party was a portrait of Barack Obama by Danish artist Gugger Petter, who lives in the United States and is one of our star artists. The portrait was commissioned by an art collector for the Obama campaign headquarters in Chicago during the Presidential election. Petter attended the party both nights, as a guest of the Danish Ambassador. The portrait was on display at the Danish Ambassadors residence through December.

Bob with one of his sculptures
| |
Born in Pueblo, Colo., Bob has a BA in Mathematics and Philosophy earned while a Benedictine monk, an MA in Art from the University of Northern Colorado, and a Doctorate in Art Education from Arizona State University. He has been a professor of art at the University of Northern Colorado, Ohio State University, University of Arizona, and Boston University (where he was Director of the Program in Artisanry). He has been president of the San Antonio Art Institute and the Museum of New Mexico Foundation, and currently resides in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Bob Cardinale builds small churches, missions and synagogues out of wood. The finished sculptures are handsome, semi-rustic earth-toned structures.
It was natural for Bob to choose to build places of worship. For five years he was a practicing Benedictine monk and from this evolved his interest in religious architecture. All of his sculptures are tributes to spiritual places, "the intense, physical manifestation of a community's beliefs.
Although Bob spends many long hours researching these historical buildings, his houses of worship are not meant to be built exactly to scale, rather they are scuptural interpretations. The weathered effect is achieved by a great deal of carving, scraping, staining and painting. Using artistic license, Bob chooses unusual colors as well when he creates these beautiful works of art.

My artwork pick this month is Bill Fisher’s “UNTITLED" 2008-16, cold wax, oil paint, and oil stick on a 60" x 60" panel. Bill does exceptional layered luminous paintings using various shapes and calligraphy to create extremely expressive abstract imagery. The painting on the left depicts layers of mixed media that creates a complex and unique narrative based upon various life experiences. It also evokes the spirit of the Southwest with homage to Native Americans, especially Navajo design and their relationship with nature. He says, "The painting process affords me the opportunity to respond to various combinations of patterns, shapes, and forms on very intuitive gut level. My intention is to express, in abstract terms, the physical, psychological, and spirtiual nature of the human condition." |

Our Own Geoffrey Gorman in the News |
| |
Geoffrey Gorman, one of our most popular and talented artists, was featured on the front page of the Santa Fe New Mexican newspaper on Monday, December 28, 2009. The article discusses the plight of artists not only in Santa Fe, but throughout the country during the economic recession.
Because of the current economic reality and it's effect on our artists, we are even more dedicated to encouraging and supporting our gallery artists. We intend to assist them in all ways possible to continue on their chosen path and bring you new and meaningful works produced by talented and passionate artists. I think we all know that ART usually choses the person rather than the person chosing art. The sacrifices are significant even in good times and it is the passion and the drive to express themselves visually that sustain them.
