The lower piece is Emily's home, the Homestead, which was adjacent to her sister-in-law's home and the location where her brother Austin and Mabel had their assignations. Emily's desk and lamp are shown in the second part. The bird represents the fragile spirit of Emily that, once gone, became a source of contention for the entire family. " |
