JAN HOPKINS

Jan

Jan at work in her studio

Perhaps one of the most dynamic artists working today, Jan Hopkins is a master at creating sculptural baskets from unusual natural materials. She uses citrus peel, lotus pods, black bamboo, and silver dollar seed pods while simultaneously incorporating traditional basket materials like agave leaves and cedar bark. Each piece is a marriage of deep sensitivity and reverence to materials with heavy emphasis on innovation. Jan began studying basketry with traditional makers, learning the art of meticulous construction and the basics of how to gather and prepare materials. Many of her works contain small pieces that are puzzled together creating elements of amazement and surprise. “I try to create baskets that preserve the beauty of the materials and create a renewal or continuance to the cycle of life."

Her Achilles Heel

"HER ACHILLES HEEL"
Jan Hopkins
Lunaria seed pod centers, weathered hydrangea petals, melon peel,
yellow cedar bark, waxed linen
7" x 10" x 4" (each shoe)
$3,500

I overheard a young woman proclaim, "I loved the idea of being in love." Like Achilles heel in Greek mythology, his vulnerable heel was his weak spot; when it comes to romantic love, the heart seems to be the weak spot. On the exterior of the right shoe, I have written the infamous proclamation, "I (eye) love the idea of being in love." In the interior of the right shoe, there is a heart with a question mark and the words "mister right." In the interior of the left shoe, there is a broken heart with the words "left behind." There is an arrow on each heel symbolizing cupid's arrow. And finally, there are eyes on the front of each shoe when placed together they are eyes that continue to look for love.

Light in Darkness

"LIGHT IN DARKNESS"
Jan Hopkins
Grapefruit peel, yellow cedar bark, ostrich shell beads, waxed linen
30" x 18" x 12"
$16,000
SOLD

As a child, I remember watching the dramatized story of Helen Keller's "The Miracle Worker." That movie left a life long impression and admiration of Helen Keller and the reason I included her in my Women Icon series. A woman who reached far beyond anyone's expectations, Helen Keller was the first deaf/blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree. As I contemplated how to depict her in a sculpture, I wanted to include her words. I made Braille tablets made of grapefruit peel and beads that says "The best and the most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt within the heart." I also included arms with the sculpture because communication did not come from her ears or spoken word but by touch. The piece is very textural emphasizing the importance of the touch. The lace like cedar bark is a technique that I developed especially for this piece.

"FORBIDDEN"
Jan Hopkins
Grapefruit peel, cantaloupe peel, yellow cedar bark,
ostrich shell beads, waxed linen
18" x 15" x 9"
$7,200
SOLD

“Forbidden” is part of my woman icon series about Eve in the Garden of Eden.  The story is often used to explain the original sin and mankind’s wrongdoings.  Eve is tempted by the serpent to eat the fruit from the tree of life.  In this piece, I have created a garden on the torso with lush leaves and ferns and a serpent disguised with the same patterning as the ferns.  It slithers around from the apple on Eve’s stomach up, around her shoulders and rests on her left shoulder to whisper in her ear.  The words written on the serpent are “Eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil.”  The writing is intentionally written upside down to symbolize the words of deception.

"CAREFREE"
Jan Hopkins
Lunaria, laurel leaves, cedar bark, waxed linen, and paper
22" x 13" x 7"
$6,500
SOLD

My Daughter who is now 33, was a sweet bouncy 9 year old when she drew the picture that is on the chest of the torso. She was our little bright star.  She went through the most horrific teen years from the ages of 14 to 22. There was years of tremendous pain and sadness. There was one thing that I held onto that one of the many counselors told me and that was "her base for her personality is formed at the age of 4" and told me "to hold onto that little girl." When she was 9, we printed cards of her artwork. I kept one of her cards in my desk to remind me that little girl was the same little girl that was in so much turmoil. I kept the faith and by the time she was 22, she had her own little girl and turned her life around. Today, I have my daughter back, a happy successful woman with a lot empathy and knowledge.  My life today is so good!

Lunaria annua, skeleton leaves, preserved leaves, Cardioiocinum giganteum seeds,
yellow cedar bark, waxed linen paper

$6,50

The visual mood of this piece says it all, it is light-hearted and happy. The quote on the collar is "Childhood is the most beautiful of all life's seasons." I hope it portrays the gift of innocence that we are all born with and something that I wish we could hold onto or bottle.

Sturgeon skin, halibut skin, salmon skin, waxed linen,
bull kelp, ostrich shell beads and shell buttons

I relate to this piece because ever since I was a child I was always the "fish out of water" or the one who marched to a different drummer...always left of normal! Ha Ha...turns out that was probably a good thing!
