"Based on the drawing, Undergrowth, the painting expands on the idea of the drawing by using the arches of the icon panel to originate the ropes for the knot around her head. The pointed arch invites us to look upward. The blue panel suggests hope and an opening for expansion. This is a counter-balance to the figure’s attempt to 'tie together' all the loose ends." MB |

"An exotic beauty with interlocking dreadlocks is posed like a regal princess. The dreadlock hair becomes more convoluted and intertwined as they move down her head, eventually turning into two spirals. Those spirals are then mirrored in the swirling strokes of a symbolic river flowing down over her shoulders. These dreadlocks are like the tightly bound path of her thoughts from origin into flowing metaphor. Those thoughts must become a flowing metaphor for them to meet the metaphorical lion that is leaping across her heart. For head and heart to speak to one another, the language must be symbolic and powerful. This is her role—to blend the power of head and heart." MB |

"This portrait has an unexpected element in it. The rope tied around her skull seems to be drawing a line between calm and chaos. On one side, her hair is a mass of unruly curls on the other side, a picture of calm order. Her face is also a picture of calm order, but the swirl of her hair suggests there’s something powerful being reigned in. The complex knot on top of her head has been guided by a higher influence, keeping her upright and aligned. The fantastic vegetation behind her is a metaphor for the wild forces channeled into order." MB |

"Here’s a man lying half-submerged in the water. His face is calm with a far-away gaze; yet, his hair is entangled in the water and the hands of someone supporting his head. The water seems to be boiling around his head. The water represents the dynamic currents that become his hair thereby bridging his conscious and unconscious mind. His hand seems to be gesturing to find the 'feel' of this state." MB |
